Oil Pulling: An Ancient Practice for Modern Health

Originating over 3,500 years ago in India, oil pulling is a traditional Ayurvedic practice that offers a range of health benefits. From improving oral health to potentially aiding in systemic disease recovery, this simple method has gained popularity globally.

What is Oil Pulling? Known as “kavala graha” in Ayurveda, oil pulling involves swishing oil in the mouth to remove toxins and promote health. The process is believed to detoxify the body by drawing out toxins from the oral cavity, which reflects the health of the entire body according to Ayurvedic medicine. Research supports that oil pulling can significantly impact oral health and hygiene. According to a study published by the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine, the practice not only reduces plaque but also improves gum health due to its microbial effects. The act of swishing activates enzymes in the saliva that absorb toxins from the blood, thus purifying both the mouth and body (Asokan, S., 2011).

How Does It Work: As you swish oil around your mouth, the lipids in the oil interact with the cell walls of microorganisms, extracting them from the teeth, gums, and tongue. This not only cleanses the mouth but also reduces the bacterial load that can lead to various dental and systemic health issues.

Benefits Beyond Oral Health: While primarily known for oral detoxification, proponents suggest that oil pulling can enhance overall well-being, citing benefits such as:

  • Enhanced immune function

  • Improved longevity

  • Reduction in systemic inflammation

Guide to Oil Pulling:

  1. Choose your oil (sesame, sunflower, or coconut oil are popular choices due to their beneficial properties). My personal favourite is coconut oil.

  2. Place a tablespoon of oil in your mouth first thing in the morning.

  3. Swish the oil around, pulling it through your teeth and covering all areas of your gums for 5-20 minutes.

  4. Dispose of the oil in a bin (NOT in the sink!) to avoid plumbing issues.

Choosing the Right Oil:

  • Sesame Oil: Known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety properties. It's rich in zinc which promotes vitality and tyrosine known to elevate mood levels (Nagendra Prasad et al., 2008).

  • Sunflower Oil: Demonstrates anti-plaque effects and is beneficial for gum health (Singh et al., 2007).

  • Coconut Oil: Contains lauric acid, known for its antimicrobial properties, making it effective against a variety of pathogens (Peedikayil et al., 2015).

Starting with shorter sessions can help ease the process, as swishing oil for 20 minutes might initially be challenging. Consistent practice, much like regular exercise, can strengthen the jaw muscles and improve the experience over time.

Oil pulling is a holistic and natural approach to health maintenance that can be easily incorporated into your daily routine. While it's not a cure-all, many find it enhances their oral health and contributes to their overall well-being.
