Nutritional therapy
What is nutritional therapy?
When I first found out about nutritional therapy I felt like there was finally something about health that made complete sense to me. The way that it considers health to be a combination of not only physical, but also mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of an individual. In order to live a happy healthy life we need to look after all of these parts and there needs to be a balance between the four. Nutritional therapy looks at the whole person and the health history all the way from birth to the present moment. Once we have comprehensive understanding of all aspects of health, we can begin creating a holistic health profile for individuals, enabling us to identify possible triggers and causes for what is driving the health issues further.
Imagine a tree where the leaves and branches are the manifestation of the illness that you can feel and see, for example fatigue, digestive issues, acne, eczema, auto immune disease or hormonal imbalances such as PMS and menstrual irregularities. Nutritional therapy digs deep under the earth to find out what is the so-called 'root cause’, imagine the roots of the tree, that is causing the symptoms to manifest. These root causes could be nutritional deficiencies, stress, toxins, poor digestion, lack of sleep and so on. By addressing the root causes, instead of putting a bandaid on the symptoms and trying to suppress them, we can finally start so see true healing from the inside out.
What happens in a nutritional therapy session?
The primary focus of nutritional therapy is ‘food as medicine’ using evidence based and personalised interventions of diet and dietary habits to optimise health and wellness.
Nutritional therapists use nutrients and lifestyle modifications to address any potential nutrient deficiencies and imbalances to optimise the functioning of body systems and encourage the body’s innate ability to return to optimal health.
Your initial nutritional therapy appointment will last approximately 90 minutes. During an in-depth initial consultation, I will go over your current symptoms, medical history and recent blood tests if available, and where appropriate your lifestyle to help me identify any imbalances and how they link to your health issues. I will then put together a personalised nutrition protocol that usually includes dietary, lifestyle and supplement advise. The protocol will be emailed to you within 3 days.
In some cases I may use specific functional tests to help me determine the root cause of your symptoms. I may also use supplements to correct any nutrient deficiencies whilst working on the premise that each person is unique and there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach, as a cause of a person’s imbalances will depend on their diet, lifestyle, genetics, and environment.
I offer consultations online via Practice Better platform. On confirmation of booking, you will receive a health questionnaire which is a review of your symptoms and a 3-day food diary for you to complete prior to your initial consultation
